⚠️ UPDATE: AMSTEP award amounts have increased since 2023

Alabama Math and Science Teacher Education Program (AMSTEP)

AMSTEP is available for teachers who graduated in the spring term of 2018 and forward. Updated award amounts (effective Fall 2022 semester for new applicants):

  • Base Program: $3,750 per semester worked ($7,500 per year) — previously listed as $5,000/year

Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program

https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/teacher

Teach full-time for five complete and consecutive academic years in a low-income school or educational service agency and you may be eligible for forgiveness of up to $17,500 on your Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans and Subsidized and Unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans.

TEACH Grant

https://studentaid.gov/understand-aid/types/grants/teach

Provides grants of up to $4,000 a year to students completing or planning to complete coursework needed to begin a career in teaching. Note: Due to federal sequestration, grants first disbursed on or after October 1, 2020 and prior to October 1, 2026 are reduced by approximately 5.7% from the approved award amount. Important: If the service commitment (four years of full-time teaching in a high-need field at a low-income school) is not fulfilled within eight years of ceasing enrollment, the grant is converted to a Direct Unsubsidized Loan with interest accrued retroactively.

Perkins Loan Forgiveness

https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/perkins

If you have a Federal Perkins Loan, you may be eligible for cancellation for full-time teaching at a low-income school, for teaching special education, or for teaching in certain subject areas.

Note: The Federal Perkins Loan Program has ended — no new Perkins Loans have been made since September 30, 2017 — but previously issued Perkins Loans remain eligible for cancellation under this program.

Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF)

https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service

PSLF forgives the remaining balance on your Federal Direct Loans after 120 qualifying payments (approximately 10 years). Does not require teaching at a low-income school — only requires employment by a qualifying employer (such as a public school district). Note: In October 2025, the administration finalized updated PSLF rules granting the Education Department new authority to exclude certain employers from the program. Review current eligibility at the Federal Student Aid website.
