    GFO/AAEE Conference

    We had a fantastic group of GFO folks attend the first-ever Get the Facts Out Annual Conference! We were in Chicago jointly with AAEE - The American Association for Employment in Education.  GFO folks met from Monday afternoon to Tuesday lunch and then joined AAEE as part of their conference.  We had really valuable discussions about what GFO Central can do to support the Community as well as how the Community can support itself in between funding. Attendees made many new connections with both GFO folks and HR Talent Acquisition Specialists who were attending AAEE.

      Congratulations to Ellen Yzerski and her compatriot, Jenn Neilson for winning the GFO Scavenger Hunt!  Ellen and Jenn won a famous Palmer House brownie!  Palmer House claims to have invented the brownie!

      New to the GFO Website

      Check out the newest GFO resource: Faculty Call to Action!  This resource tests extremely well with faculty, drawing their eyes and attention to some key facts that we would like our colleagues to hear.  

      This cartoon is designed to be placed in a location where faculty will notice it such as near the department coffee, water cooler, copier, etc. 

      The QR code can be modified to go to your program page with faculty resources (single slides or posters). Right now it points to the GFO resources on GettheFactsOut.org.

      Math champion and math change agent, Sarah Dyess and Jean Lee, team up to present at the GFO-AAEE Conference on Oct 25, 2023, in Chicago, IL. In this fun presentation, we shared strategies on how to recruit high school students using GFO materials and positioned the audience as high school students. Consider co-presenting with champions! We both learned a lot from each other.

      Math - 11 Newsletter

      Math Change Agents Gary Martin, Jean Lee, and Glenn Waddell present at National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Washington D.C. on Oct 26, 2023. Over 6,000 mathematics educators attended this conference. 

      $3.4 M awarded to PhysTEC 

      Phystec

      The National Science Foundation has awarded a five-year, $3.4 million grant to the APS, in partnership with the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT), to scale up and build the capacity of PhysTEC’s (Physics Teacher Education Coalition) community of physics departments and teacher education programs.

      One key feature of this new effort is to work more closely with departments without teacher preparation programs to support their teacher recruitment efforts, and that uses GFO resources!  PhysTEC aims to bring more ownership and agency to its coalition members and redesign our efforts to better serve the needs of a greater variety of PTE programs, paying particular attention to issues of equity by working closely with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs).       A GFO Champion is anyone who shares facts about the teaching profession by using the materials and messages from the GFO project locally or nationally. A GFO Champion can be a current teacher, a faculty member, a teacher recruiter, or a careers advisor, or more!

       

      It helps the project a great deal if you register as a Champion - and, you will appear on the community map, earn designations that can be included in your professional portfolio, and can make priority requests for local teacher salary and benefits data.

      Get the Facts Out is an NSF funded partnership between the Colorado School of Mines and four national societies: American Physical Society, American Chemical Society, American Association of Physics Teachers, and the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators. GFO is a unique project that is designed to reach STEM majors in a large fraction of all U.S. mathematics, chemistry, and physics departments and has potential to significantly address teacher shortages in these high-need STEM disciplines.
